Chapter 20

Ryder

Knock! Knock! Knock!

I’m woken up by the loud banging on my door. “Reaper!” Mag pounds on the door twice more. “Get your ass out of bed. Emergency church. Five minutes.”

Shit. This can’t be good.

And it wasn’t.

“The Aztecs hit the weapons shipment for the Kings,” Mack tells the table.

The Steel Kings MC is my uncle Tripp, mom’s older brother’s club. They, along with the Road Heretics MC are our allies.

“That should have been an airtight delivery,” I say from my seat at Mack’s left. “No one outside us, the Nomads, and the Kings knew what was being transported.”

“Where was the hit?” Zeus traps his fingers on the table, his tell that he’s holding in rage.

“Grove Hill off of Bakers Highway,” Mag tells the club. “I called Tripp and he’s going to check his men for any rats, same as us and the Nomads.” He narrows his eyes on all the brothers.

Hawk smashes his fist into the table. “Fucking rats,” he growls.

Several of my brothers clench their fists in a white-knuckle grip and mumble similar angry sentiments.

All except one.

Victor, or Viper as the brothers have named him, has only been a patched member for a few years. He came to us from another Sinners chapter that disbanded. I didn’t really pay attention to him outside of club business, but I definitely did now as I read everyone’s reactions in the room. I watch as he sits there with an angry expression on his face matching the others. But it’s his eyes that I zone in on.

While everyone’s eyes show the fire behind their anger, Viper’s shows a bored smugness. The more I study them, I swear I can see something else in them. Something like victory.

My brain says call him out in front of the club, but my gut says don’t. I go with my gut, nine times out of ten it’s usually right. When Mack calls the end of church, I pull him, Mag, and Hawk aside while everyone exits the room.

Once the doors are closed Mack turns to me. “You were pretty quiet through the end there. Reading the room, I take it.” He knows damn well I was. One of the skills I pride myself in being useful. “You noticed something,” he says as he watches me. My father knows me well.

I nod. “Yeah, I did. My gut is telling me to look closely at Viper. I think he’s the rat.”

Hawk’s eyes widen. “Viper? Are you sure?”

I explain to them everything I noticed during church. “He didn’t really look at all like how we felt. Like he was just putting on a face for our benefit.” Leaning against the table with my arms crossed, I let them process the possibility of him being the rat.

“Maybe he was trying to stay calm?” Hawk lets out a heavy sigh.

I shake my head. “Nah, it didn’t seem like that. My gut is telling me the vibe with him is off.”

They all stay dead silent. Knowing from experience that my gut is usually right, they don’t speak up to question it.
